The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria conducted its May 2026 Diet Professional Examinations from Tuesday, May 19 to Thursday, May 21, 2026. Thousands of accountancy students across the country sat papers at over 50 examination centres nationwide — and results are now being awaited. Meanwhile, the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria runs its own biannual certification cycle with an October diet approaching. Both institutions serve the same fundamental purpose: producing certified, ethically grounded professionals for Nigeria's finance, banking, and business sectors.

Its flagship qualification — the Chartered Accountant (ACA) designation — is recognised internationally and commands significant premium in the Nigerian and global labour market.

ICAN currently operates a new professional examination syllabus, with the ATSWA (Accounting Technicians Scheme West Africa) programme also undergoing a new syllabus effective September 2026. This means candidates at every stage of the ICAN pathway — from foundation through to the Case Study level — are working within a structured, regularly updated framework that keeps pace with global accounting standards.

The May 2026 Diet Professional Examinations ran across three days at over 50 centres across Nigeria, with additional centres in Buea, Cameroon and London, United Kingdom. The timetable was structured as follows: Tuesday, May 19 covered Financial Accounting, Financial Reporting and Strategic Business Reporting in the morning session, and Management Accounting, Taxation and Advanced Taxation in the afternoon. Wednesday, May 20 covered Performance Management and Strategic Financial Management in the morning, and Business Environment, Audit Assurance and Forensic, and Advanced Audit Assurance and Forensic in the afternoon. Thursday, May 21 featured the Case Study in the morning — a four-hour paper — alongside Public Sector Accounting and Finance, with Corporate and Business Law and Financial Management in the afternoon session.

Results for the May 2026 diet are typically released eight to ten weeks after the final examination date. Based on the May 21 close date, candidates should expect results between mid-July and late July 2026. Results are checked through the Professional Exam Results Checker on the ICAN portal. Candidates will need their student registration number and examination details to access individual results online.

For candidates who did not pass one or more papers in the May diet, the next opportunity is the November 2026 Diet. Registration for the November diet is expected to open in August 2026. Based on historical patterns, the examination itself will hold across three days in mid-to-late November 2026. A critical rule that every ICAN student must be aware of: the Five-Year Rule, which took effect from the November 2017 diet, means that credits earned at the Professional level have a shelf life. The Institute has the principal responsibility to determine the standards of knowledge and skills to be attained by persons seeking to become members of the banking profession, secure the establishment and maintenance of a register of members, conduct professional examinations leading to the award of certificates, and ensure the furtherance, maintenance and observance of ethical standards and professionalism among practitioners of the banking profession in Nigeria.

Its flagship qualification is the Associateship of the Chartered Institute of Bankers — the ACIB — which is the recognised professional certification for chartered bankers in Nigeria. The ACIB consists of three examination levels: Diploma, Intermediate Professional, and Chartered Banker. Successful completion of all three levels leads to the award of the ACIB certificate and full Associateship membership of the Institute.

At the Diploma level, the examination covers Economics of Banking and Finance, Customer Service and Relationship Management, Banking Law and Regulation, and Ethics, Corporate Governance and Professionalism. The Intermediate Professional level covers Financial Economics, Financial and Management Accounting, Marketing of Financial Services, International Trade and Finance, Strategic Management and Leadership, and Corporate Financial Management. The October 2026 diet is the next major sitting, and registration is currently either open or approaching its opening window.

Every diet, the examination timetable containing the subjects, date, and duration of examination as well as applicable fees are prepared as part of the examination form, information handbills, and hosted on the CIBN website at cibng.org. Separate timetables are also prepared for centres outside Nigeria, including The Gambia, Ghana, Liberia, and Sierra Leone.

Candidates planning to write the October 2026 diet should visit cibng.org immediately to confirm registration status, download the current diet timetable once published, and verify their examination centre. Payment for CIBN examinations is made through bank drafts, bank cheques, or POS payment at CIBN secretariat offices in Lagos, Abuja, and Owerri, or online through the Interswitch platform.

An important rule at the Foundation level: candidates are required to pass all subjects of each section of the Foundation examination at a sitting. Reference may be allowed in two subjects only in Section I and one subject in Section II, and candidates must pass the referred subject or subjects within the following two diets. Failure to do so requires re-sitting all subjects in that section. This rule has caught many candidates off guard — understanding it before sitting is essential for planning diet progression strategically.
