JAMB 2026 Official Cut-Off Marks Released ? Full List for All Institutions
The wait is over. JAMB has officially announced the minimum cut-off marks for the 2026/2027 academic session following today's Policy Meeting on Admissions held at the Body of Benchers Auditorium, Jabi, Abuja. The decision was reached after extensive deliberations involving Vice-Chancellors, Rectors, Provosts, Registrars, regulatory bodies, and key government stakeholders including the Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Olatunji Alausa.
Here is everything you need to know ? clearly, officially, and without rumours.
Official 2026 JAMB National Minimum Cut-Off Marks
The following are the nationally binding minimum scores approved at today's policy meeting. No tertiary institution in Nigeria ? federal, state, or private ? is permitted to admit any candidate below these marks:
- Universities (Federal, State and Private): 140
- Polytechnics and Monotechnics: 100
- Colleges of Education: 100
- Colleges of Nursing Sciences: 140

What These Cut-Off Marks Mean ? And What They Do Not Mean
This is the most misunderstood aspect of the JAMB cut-off mark every single year. Let us be completely clear:
The national minimum cut-off mark is the floor ? not the passport to admission. Meeting the national minimum only means you are eligible to be considered. It does not guarantee admission to any institution or course.
Here is how it works in practice:
National Minimum vs Institutional Cut-Off
Every university, polytechnic, and college of education sets its own departmental cut-off marks ? which are almost always significantly higher than the national minimum. A candidate who scores 140 meets JAMB's national requirement but may still not qualify for their chosen institution or course if that department requires 200, 250, or 280.
What Competitive Courses Typically Require
Based on historical trends and available 2026 institutional data, here is what candidates targeting competitive courses should realistically expect:
- Medicine and Surgery (UNILAG, UI, OAU, UNIBEN): 280?300+
- Law (University of Ibadan, ABU): 250?280+
- Pharmacy, Dentistry, Nursing: 220?270+
- Engineering (Federal Universities): 200?250+
- Computer Science (Federal Universities): 180?220+
- Accounting, Economics, Business Admin: 180?220+
- Education courses: 150?180+
- Arts and Humanities: 150?180+
These are general ranges. Every institution announces its own exact departmental figures ? always verify directly with your chosen school through their official website or notice board.
Historical Context: How 2026 Compares to Previous Years
Understanding how this year's cut-off fits into the broader trend helps candidates plan realistically:
- 2008?2017: 180 (universities) ? the longest sustained benchmark in JAMB history
- 2017?2019: Dropped sharply to 120 ? a 33% reduction amid low candidate performance
- 2019?2021: Raised to 160 ? reflecting improved performance trends
- 2021?2024: Settled at 140 ? a 12.5% reduction from the previous range
- 2025: Raised to 150 for universities, 100 for polytechnics, 140 for nursing colleges
- 2026: 140 for universities, 100 for polytechnics and colleges of education
The 2026 cut-off reflects the performance reality of the 2026 UTME ? in which only approximately 17.1% of the 2,243,816 candidates who sat the examination scored above 200. Setting a higher national minimum would have excluded the vast majority of candidates from consideration entirely.
What Happens Next ? The Admission Timeline
Now that the cut-off marks have been officially set, the 2026/2027 admission exercise moves into full gear. Here is exactly what comes next and when:
JAMB CAPS Opens for Institutional Uploads
Universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education will begin uploading their admission lists through the JAMB Central Admission Processing System (CAPS) at caps.jamb.gov.ng. Candidates must monitor their CAPS dashboard regularly ? this is where your admission offer will appear.
Post-UTME Screening Begins
Institutions will begin announcing their Post-UTME dates, forms, and requirements. Some private universities have already released their forms. For public universities, expect announcements to begin within the next two to four weeks. Start preparing now ? do not wait for your institution's announcement before beginning your Post-UTME revision.
O'Level Result Upload Deadline
Candidates who have not yet uploaded their WAEC, NECO, or NABTEB results to their JAMB CAPS profile must do so immediately. Failure to upload valid O'Level results with the minimum required credits ? five credits including English Language and Mathematics ? will disqualify you from admission regardless of your UTME score.
Change of Institution or Course Window
Candidates whose scores do not meet the cut-off requirements of their first-choice institution can use the JAMB CAPS portal to change their institution or course. This window typically opens a few weeks after the policy meeting. Watch for JAMB's official announcement on when this window opens.
Result Slip Printing
If you have not yet printed your JAMB 2026 result slip, do so immediately at efacility.jamb.gov.ng. Your result slip is required for virtually every stage of the admission process ? Post-UTME registration, document verification, and CAPS acceptance. Do not delay this.
Specific School Cut-Off Marks ? What We Know So Far
While institutional departmental cut-offs will be released progressively over the coming weeks, here is what historical data and early 2026 announcements indicate for some of Nigeria's most popular institutions:
Federal Universities
- University of Lagos (UNILAG): General minimum approximately 200. Medicine 280+, Law 270+.
- University of Ibadan (UI): General minimum approximately 200. Medicine 290+.
- Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU): General minimum 200. Medicine 280+.
- Ahmadu Bello University (ABU): General minimum 180. Medicine 270+, Law 250+.
- University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN): General minimum 180.
- University of Benin (UNIBEN): General minimum 180. Medicine 270+.
- Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA): General minimum 180.
State Universities
- Lagos State University (LASU): General minimum approximately 200.
- Rivers State University: General minimum approximately 180.
- Ladoke Akintola University (LAUTECH): General minimum approximately 180.
Polytechnics
- Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH): National minimum of 100 applies. Most departments require 120?150.
- Federal Polytechnic Nekede: National minimum of 100 applies.
- Kaduna Polytechnic: National minimum of 100 applies.
Important: All institutional cut-off marks listed above are based on historical trends and available early announcements. Always verify with your specific institution's official website or admissions office. Departmental cut-offs will be released officially after Post-UTME screening is completed.
What Should You Do Right Now ? Based on Your Score
If Your Score Is 200 and Above
You are in a strong position for most universities. Begin preparing seriously for Post-UTME. Research your chosen institution's historical Post-UTME format, past questions, and screening requirements. Do not be complacent ? Post-UTME performance is a significant factor in final admission decisions.
If Your Score Is Between 140 and 199
You meet the national university minimum. However, your options at highly competitive federal universities may be limited depending on your course. Research institutions where your score is competitive. Consider whether a change of institution or course to one with a realistic cut-off for your score makes strategic sense. Use the JAMB CAPS change window if necessary.
If Your Score Is Between 100 and 139
You do not meet the national university minimum of 140, but you qualify for polytechnics and colleges of education where the national minimum is 100. Explore strong polytechnic programmes in your field of interest. A Higher National Diploma (HND) from a reputable polytechnic, combined with a top-up degree, remains a highly viable academic and career pathway.
If Your Score Is Below 100
You do not meet any national minimum cut-off for the 2026/2027 session. Your best option is to begin preparation for the 2027 UTME with a clear, structured study plan. Use this year productively ? strengthen your weak subjects, practise extensively on CBT platforms, and return in 2027 better prepared. Many of Nigeria's most successful professionals did not gain admission on their first attempt.
A Direct Warning ? Avoid These Dangerous Mistakes
- Do not trust cut-off marks circulating on social media that are not sourced from JAMB's official announcement. Several fake lists have already been circulating ahead of today's meeting.
- Do not pay any agent or individual claiming they can secure your admission regardless of your score. This is fraud ? and it can result in permanent barring from JAMB examinations.
- Do not delay uploading your O'Level results. This is the single most common reason otherwise qualified candidates lose their admission.
- Do not ignore the Post-UTME. A strong JAMB score does not guarantee admission if you perform poorly in your institution's Post-UTME screening.
