Today, NABTEB conducts examinations twice yearly — the May/June series for in-school candidates and the November/December series for private candidates. The board is headquartered in Benin City, Edo State, with offices across all 36 states, six geopolitical zones, and the FCT.

Registration for the 2026 NBC/NTC May/June In-School examinations commenced on Monday, January 26, 2026, and closed on Sunday, May 31, 2026, with examinations beginning on Monday, June 15, 2026. NABTEB subsequently announced a short extension of the registration deadline, moving the final registration close to midnight of Wednesday, June 3, 2026, to accommodate schools that had not completed their submissions.

The examinations run from June 15 through July 14, 2026, covering both theory and practical papers across all registered subjects. There is no free week between theory and practical papers — candidates move directly from written papers into practicals within the same timetable window. This is an important structural detail that catches some candidates unprepared.

The official NABTEB registration fee for the 2026 examination is ₦24,500. This fee covers the application form, digital biometrics, examination materials, practicals, and result checking. All payments are processed through Remita, payable to the National Business and Technical Examinations Board, Benin City.

NBC vs NTC — Understanding the Difference

The two certificates at the centre of the May/June examination serve distinct but related purposes, and candidates should understand what each represents before results arrive.

The National Business Certificate (NBC) is awarded to candidates who complete and pass examinations in business-oriented technical programmes — Accounting, Marketing, Office Technology and Management, Salesmanship, Business Studies, and related fields. It is the business track of NABTEB certification, combining trade-specific knowledge with general education subjects.

The National Technical Certificate (NTC) is awarded to candidates in technical and vocational trade programmes — Electrical Installation, Mechanical Engineering Craft Practice, Welding and Fabrication, Plumbing and Pipe Fitting, Catering Craft Practice, Cosmetology, Auto Body Repair, Carpentry and Joinery, and dozens of other trade fields. It represents hands-on technical competence verified through both written and practical assessment.

Both certificates require candidates to pass a minimum of eight subject areas, which must include English Language and Mathematics alongside their chosen trade and trade-related subjects. To earn the NBC/NTC Certificate, a candidate must pass general education subjects including English Language and Mathematics, trade group subjects, and trade-related subjects.

Candidates who pass the required trade, trade-related, and general education subjects qualify as certified craftsmen, enabling them to gain employment, become self-employed, or create jobs for others. With sufficient credit passes, candidates are also eligible for admission into higher institutions in Nigeria and abroad.

Are NABTEB Certificates Really Worth It? The Honest Answer

This is the question many families ask — usually quietly, because asking it out loud feels like questioning a choice that has already been made. The honest answer is: yes, and in some contexts, more than people realise.

The NBC/NTC is higher than the SSCE of WAEC/NECO because it is a professional certificate with a higher entry point in the public service. The NBC/NTC is globally recognised for admission to tertiary institutions within and outside the country, and is rated higher for gainful employment opportunities outside the country.

That is not marketing language — it reflects the structure of NABTEB's assessment. Unlike WAEC and NECO, which are primarily theoretical examinations, NABTEB is criterion-referenced. It assesses whether a candidate can actually perform the tasks required by their trade, not only whether they can describe them in writing. A candidate who earns an NTC in Electrical Installation has demonstrated practical competence that is immediately deployable in the labour market.

For university admission within Nigeria, NABTEB results are accepted by JAMB alongside WAEC and NECO results. Candidates with the required credit passes — including English and Mathematics — can apply to universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education using NABTEB results. Some higher institutions in Nigeria accept a combination of two SSCE certificates from a candidate in order to help complement the certificate that has less required credits. A candidate combining NABTEB credits with WAEC or NECO credits is a legitimate and effective admissions strategy.

Beyond Nigeria, NABTEB qualifications are recognised for admission and employment in several countries, particularly in the United Kingdom and across West Africa. NABTEB aligns its qualifications with the National Skill Qualification Framework (NSQF), which standardises and improves the quality of vocational and technical education across the country and ensures that graduates with NABTEB qualifications meet national and international standards.

The Advanced Level — What Comes After NBC/NTC

One aspect of NABTEB's structure that most people outside the technical education system do not know about is the Advanced Level pathway. NABTEB offers Advanced National Business Certificate (ANBC) and Advanced National Technical Certificate (ANTC) — called NABTEB A-Level — which are equivalent to NCE and OND qualifications. Candidates who earn their NBC or NTC and acquire the required work experience can proceed to the Advanced Level, which then qualifies them for entry into National Diploma and Higher National Diploma programmes at polytechnics.

This creates a complete vertical pathway: Technical College → NBC/NTC → Work Experience → ANBC/ANTC → ND/HND. It is a parallel route to the WAEC → UTME → Degree pathway — less visible, less discussed, but equally structured and recognised within Nigeria's educational framework.

Rules Every Candidate Must Follow

The 2026 NABTEB NBC/NTC examination operates under standard NABTEB examination rules that every candidate must understand before each paper date.

Photocard mandatory at every sitting. No candidate is admitted into the examination hall without their NABTEB photocard. Lost photocards must be replaced through the school's examination officer before the relevant paper — not at the gate on the day.

NIN was required at registration. Eligible candidates must possess a valid National Identification Number. Any candidate whose NIN was not verified during registration should resolve this through their school immediately to avoid result withholding.

Practical and theory papers are both compulsory. Missing a practical paper results in no award for that subject — regardless of performance in the theory paper. With no free week between theory and practical sessions in the 2026 timetable, candidates must track both components of their subject schedule carefully.

Biometric data must have been captured. Registration requires biometric capture — right and left thumbprints — at an approved NABTEB biometric data capture centre using the official NABTEB Biometric Data Capture Application. No electronic devices. Mobile phones, programmable calculators, and smart devices are banned from the examination hall. Non-programmable scientific calculators are permitted for papers that require them.

NABTEB typically releases May/June results within six to eight weeks of the final examination date. Based on that timeline, the 2026 NBC/NTC results are expected between late August and early September 2026.

Results are checked through the official NABTEB result portal. Candidates will need their registration number and a token PIN, which is purchased separately from the result portal. NABTEB results are graded similarly to other examination boards in Nigeria. Students receive grades ranging from A1 (Excellent) to F9 (Fail), depending on their performance. These results are used for both academic progression and job placements.

Candidates whose results contain errors — wrong name, wrong subject entry, missing paper — must report immediately through their school's examination officer and the nearest NABTEB State Office. Do not wait. Result correction windows are finite and close before most candidates realise they exist.

For candidates intending to use their NABTEB results for university admission, results must be uploaded to the JAMB CAPS system — the same process required for WAEC and NECO results.
