NOUN 2026_1 Semester Results: What to Expect, How to Check and What Comes Next

Tuesday, June 30, 2026 is six days away — and for over 700,000 active students of the National Open University of Nigeria, it is one of the most anticipated dates on their academic calendar. That is when the university is scheduled to release results for the 2026_1 semester, bringing to a close a cycle that included Pen-on-Paper examinations, Computer-Based e-examinations, project defences, and Tutor-Marked Assessments running across nearly five months of academic activity.

For many students — particularly those in their first year, those carrying failed courses from previous semesters, or those approaching graduation — what appears on the results portal on June 30 carries real weight. This guide prepares you for that moment: what the academic calendar looked like this semester, how to check your result without the portal locking you out, what the grades and GPA mean for your academic standing, and what to do if something is missing or wrong.

The 2026_1 Semester at a Glance

The 2026 first semester opened on January 31, 2026 with the commencement of online facilitation across all NOUN eLearning portals and study centres. All registrations for the 2026 First Semester closed on March 4, 2026, and IT/SIWES defence ran for four weeks from March 14 to April 9, 2026.

Examinations followed in two separate formats based on student level. Pen-on-Paper examinations for students in 300 Level to 800 Level ran from April 19 to May 13, 2026, with students expected to sit at least two exams daily given the compressed three-week window. The POP timetable spanned 16 examination days, with sessions at 8:30 AM, 11:00 AM, and 2:00 PM daily. Days one to eight covered the Faculty of Arts, Computing, Education, and Management Sciences, while days nine to sixteen covered Agricultural Sciences, Law, Science, Health Sciences, and Social Sciences.

E-Examinations for students in 100 Level to 200 Level ran from May 19 to June 6, 2026 — a two-week Computer-Based window also requiring at least two exams daily. Project Moderation and Defence — included formally in NOUN's academic calendar for the first time — ran from June 1 to June 20, 2026.

The expected date for release of results, subject to Senate acceptance, is Tuesday, June 30, 2026. The Senate approval condition is significant. If the Examinations Committee requires additional time to resolve outstanding issues before Senate sign-off, the release could shift by a few days. Students should monitor the official NOUN portal and verified NOUN update platforms rather than relying on dates shared in student WhatsApp groups, which are not always accurate.

How to Check Your Result on June 30

NOUN results are accessed through the official student portal. There is no SMS checking method, no alternative website, and no third-party platform that legitimately delivers NOUN results ahead of or instead of the official portal.

The NOUN Student Management System Portal at nouonline.nou.edu.ng is the central gateway for everything a NOUN student needs — from course registration and exam enrolment to results checking and payment processing. To check your 2026_1 result, log in using your matriculation number and password, navigate to the Results section on your student dashboard, and select the 2026_1 semester. Your course-by-course grades and GPA for the semester will be displayed once the Senate has approved and results are published.

On result release day, the portal experiences heavy traffic from hundreds of thousands of students checking simultaneously. Over 200,000 students will be accessing the portal at the same time — checking early prevents last-minute login issues. The safest windows are between 5:00 AM and 8:00 AM or after 10:00 PM on June 30, when traffic is lowest. If the portal is slow or unresponsive, wait and try again rather than refreshing repeatedly — excessive requests can temporarily lock an account.

Understanding Your Grades and GPA

NOUN uses a five-point grading scale across all undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. The grade bands and their corresponding score ranges are as follows: A (70 percent and above) earns 5 grade points. B (60 to 69 percent) earns 4 grade points. C (50 to 59 percent) earns 3 grade points. D (45 to 49 percent) earns 2 grade points. F (below 45 percent) earns 0 grade points.

Your Semester Grade Point Average is calculated by multiplying each course's grade point by the number of credit units assigned to it, summing all results, and dividing by the total credit units registered for that semester. Your Cumulative Grade Point Average covers all semesters from enrolment to the most recently completed semester and is the figure that determines your final degree classification at graduation.

Degree classifications at NOUN follow the standard Nigerian university framework. A CGPA of 4.50 to 5.00 earns First Class Honours. 3.50 to 4.49 earns Second Class Upper. 2.40 to 3.49 earns Second Class Lower. 1.50 to 2.39 earns Third Class. Below 1.50 is a Pass Degree. Students who fall below the minimum CGPA threshold for their programme risk being placed on academic probation — a formal warning that improved performance is required in the next semester.

Every course attempted, including failed courses, contributes to CGPA calculation. A failed course that is later repeated does not erase the original F grade — the repeat result sits alongside the original, which means persistent failure in any course has a compounding negative effect on overall standing. Students who are borderline should register for supplementary examinations where available rather than allowing an F to stand and compound.

How TMA Scores Feed Into Your Final Grade

NOUN's assessment structure combines two components for every course. Tutor-Marked Assessments submitted online throughout the semester contribute 30 percent of the total course score. The end-of-semester examination — whether POP or e-examination — contributes the remaining 70 percent.

This means a student who performed well on TMAs but wrote a poor examination can still fail the course overall. Equally, a student who neglected TMA submissions has already surrendered 30 percent of the course before sitting a single paper. Both components matter and neither can substitute for the other.

TMA scores are already captured in the system before the result release date. What the portal will display on June 30 is the combined final grade for each course — TMA plus examination — not the two scores separately. Students who believe their TMA score has not been correctly reflected should raise the complaint through their Faculty and Study Centre, not through the general portal.

What to Do If a Course Is Missing or Incorrect

A missing course grade is not automatically a failure. The correct response is to visit the Study Centre where the examination was written and report the discrepancy immediately to the Centre Director or Examination Officer. Bring your examination docket, exam slip, TMA submission records, and matriculation number. Unresolved discrepancies can be escalated through the Faculty to the Examinations and Assessment Directorate at NOUN headquarters in Abuja.

Students whose results show an outright failure in a course should confirm whether that course has a supplementary examination option before automatically re-registering for a full course repeat in the 2026_2 semester. Where supplementary examinations are available, they allow a student to resit the failed paper without re-registering the entire course — saving both fees and credit unit accumulation time.

The 2026_2 Semester — What the Calendar Shows

With the 2026_1 semester closing on results day, the second semester cycle follows. Second Semester Registration is scheduled to open on October 5, 2026 — giving students a window of approximately three months between the first semester result and the start of the next academic cycle. That window is not downtime. It is the period for resolving outstanding result issues, planning the next course load, and for graduating students, completing convocation requirements.

Students carrying outstanding courses from 2026_1 — through failure or incomplete registration — should factor these into their 2026_2 planning. NOUN permits students to carry over failed courses and register them in subsequent semesters, but accumulating too many outstanding courses in later levels creates congestion that can be difficult to clear before the programme's maximum completion duration is reached.
