Upcoming Examinations in Nigeria 2026: WAEC GCE, NECO GCE, NABTEB and Post-UTME Dates Every Candidate Must Know

The examination season in Nigeria never fully stops — it shifts. While thousands of SS3 students are still sitting their NECO SSCE papers and NABTEB candidates are deep into their NBC/NTC examinations, a fresh wave of critical deadlines is already building for the second half of 2026. And many candidates are not paying attention yet.

This is a mistake that costs admission slots, deferred dreams, and another full year of waiting.

Whether you are a private candidate chasing O'Level credits, a UTME candidate waiting to hear from your chosen university, or a parent trying to make sense of the calendar on behalf of your child, this guide cuts through the noise. These are the examinations that matter for the rest of 2026, when they open, what they cost, and what you need to do before the windows close.

1. WAEC GCE Second Series 2026 — The Most Urgent Deadline Right Now

The West African Examinations Council has already opened registration for its 2026 Second Series of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination for private candidates. This is the examination most Nigerians simply call WAEC GCE, and it serves a critical function in the education system: it gives out-of-school candidates, repeated candidates, and anyone who needs to add or improve subjects a second shot at O'Level certification each year.

Registration is currently live at ₦27,000. The deadline for PIN generation is Friday, 31 July 2026, and candidates must complete biometrics capture and full online registration no later than Sunday, 2 August 2026. That window is closer than it looks.

The examination itself is expected to hold between September and November 2026, following WAEC's established annual pattern. As of today, the subject-by-subject timetable has not been released. That is normal — WAEC typically publishes it weeks before the examination period begins. What is not normal is waiting until the timetable drops before registering. By then, you may have missed the deadline entirely.

Candidates should buy their PIN, complete biometrics at an accredited WAEC centre, and monitor the official website for the timetable release. Do not rely on social media groups or WhatsApp forwards for exam dates — they have been wrong before, sometimes dangerously so.

2. NECO GCE 2026 — November/December Series for Private Candidates

The National Examinations Council runs a parallel track to WAEC for private candidates. Its SSCE External examination — widely called NECO GCE — is scheduled for the November/December window of 2026, and registration opens in less than three weeks from today.

Registration opens: Monday, 7 July 2026.
Registration closes: Monday, 13 October 2026.
Late registration: 14 to 31 October 2026 (penalty fee applies).
Examination period: October to November 2026 (timetable pending).

NECO GCE results carry the same weight as WAEC results for university admission in Nigeria. JAMB accepts them. Universities accept them. Polytechnics and colleges of education accept them. That means a candidate who writes both WAEC GCE Second Series and NECO GCE in the same year effectively has two independent sets of O'Level results to work with — a significant strategic advantage when chasing the five credit passes required for admission into most programmes.

For candidates who sat for NECO SSCE Internal earlier this year and are waiting for results, the GCE option is also a safety net. If results fall short, the November sitting can plug the gap in time for the 2027 admission cycle.

Note that a valid National Identification Number (NIN) is mandatory for NECO registration. Candidates without one should visit the nearest NIMC enrolment centre immediately — processing can take time, and 7 July is not far.

3. NABTEB November/December GCE 2026 — For Technical and Vocational Candidates

The National Business and Technical Examinations Board serves a category of candidates that the mainstream conversation often overlooks: those trained in technical colleges, vocational programmes, and business certificate tracks. NABTEB's November/December GCE is their equivalent of WAEC GCE and NECO GCE — a private candidates' route to certification in National Business Certificate (NBC) and National Technical Certificate (NTC) qualifications.

Registration expected to open: August/September 2026.
Registration fee: approximately ₦24,500 (late registration attracts an additional ₦5,000 penalty).
Examination period: November to December 2026 (timetable not yet released).

No formal announcement has been made yet on the exact registration opening date. Candidates in this stream should monitor nabteb.gov.ng closely and visit their nearest NABTEB State or Zonal Office regularly. Given that earlier 2026 deadlines like the NCEE were extended under pressure, it is still wise not to assume extensions will always come — prepare to register the moment the window opens.

4. Post-UTME Screenings 2026/2027 — A Fragmented but Critical Process

Unlike WAEC, NECO, and NABTEB, which are centralised and nationally coordinated, Post-UTME is entirely decentralised. Every university, polytechnic, and college of education sets its own screening schedule, registration fee, cut-off score, and subject requirement. That is both its strength and its biggest source of confusion for candidates.

Following the April 2026 JAMB UTME, institutions across Nigeria have started announcing their screening processes. Here is what is confirmed so far.

University of Lagos (UNILAG)

UNILAG's Post-UTME online registration is currently open and runs from Monday, 15 June to Wednesday, 8 July 2026. Candidates must have scored 200 and above in the 2026 UTME and hold five O'Level credit passes including English Language and Mathematics. The screening fee is ₦2,000 and the application fee is ₦3,500. O'Level results must be uploaded on both JAMB CAPS and the UNILAG portal by 14 August 2026. The examination is a Computer-Based Test conducted on-campus at Akoka, Yaba.

University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT)

UNIPORT conducted its own Post-UTME screening between 8 and 13 June 2026 for candidates who scored a minimum of 160 in the UTME. Candidates who applied here should check the admissions portal for next steps, result timelines, and any additional requirements.

Other Universities — August to October Window

The majority of federal and state universities — including OAU, ABU, UI, UNILORIN, UNN, UNIZIK, and dozens of others — have not yet released their 2026 Post-UTME dates. Based on historical patterns, most of these institutions will run their screenings between August and October 2026, though that depends on when each school chooses to move after JAMB's own admission timelines.

Candidates targeting these institutions should check their chosen school's official admissions portal at least twice a week. Many universities also post critical updates on official social media pages. Missing a Post-UTME deadline is not recoverable within the same admission cycle — there are no second chances once the window closes.

The Bigger Picture: What This Calendar Means for Nigerian Students

Looking at the full second half of 2026, the examination pressure on Nigerian students and their families is considerable. Multiple bodies, overlapping windows, different portals, different fee structures, and different eligibility conditions — all of this running simultaneously, often without coordinated communication from the bodies themselves.

That is the reality of the Nigerian education system as it currently stands. It is not a system designed for passive candidates. It rewards those who research early, register on time, and do not wait for the last minute to begin preparation.

The NIN requirement, now mandatory across WAEC, NECO, and NABTEB, adds another layer of urgency. Parents of younger candidates especially should verify that NIN registration has been completed well before any exam window opens. NIMC offices can be slow, and a missing NIN has derailed registrations before.
